Gutter Replacement and Spring Maintenance

gutter replacement

During the winter months, we are primarily focused on clearing snow and ice off the driveway. We don’t mean to neglect other home maintenance, but understandably, certain things take a back seat. If one of those things was your gutters, gutter replacement might be in order this spring. Snow, ice, and other severe weather conditions can damage your gutters. If the damage is minor or only in a few places, you can repair them with sealant and fasteners, but it is wise to replace them if the damage is extensive. Luckily, Guarded Gutters has you covered. Here are some signs that you need to replace your gutters this spring.

Rust, Holes, and Cracks

If your gutters are cracked after the winter, that is a sign of a few issues with your gutters. The most obvious problems are the cracks; water will leak out rather than run off where it is supposed to drain. Cracks may also indicate that the angle of your gutters is off. Water expands when it freezes, which is probably what caused the cracks in your gutters. Because your gutters were full of water that then froze, that could mean that they are not resting at an angle that will allow them to drain properly. Gutter replacement is the most straightforward repair when cracks in your gutters are paired with your gutters resting at the wrong angle.

Holes and rust are often a sign of age. Gutters are exposed to the elements, and over time the metal becomes oxidized and begins to rust. If that rust builds up or is left for too long, holes can form. You may not have to replace all your gutters if this happens, but you should at least replace the rusty sections.

Fallen Fasteners and Screws

Once the snow melts, walk around the perimeter of your house and look for fasteners or screws on the ground. Wind, snow, and age can loosen screws and fasteners, causing them to fall off. If you don’t find a lot of hardware on the ground, some maintenance is all that is required. New fasteners and screws are sufficient to repair your gutters. However, if most of the hardware holding your gutters to the house has fallen off, gutter replacement is your best bet.
